Tips on renting a car

Tips on renting a car in California

Hiring a car can sometimes be a daunting experience.

Most car rental companies are honest and fair and in the normal course of business are just protecting the cars that earn them a living so treat the car as you would your own.

Points to consider
You dont want any cost surprises when you approach the car rental counter. When you obtain a quote from your selected hirer always make sure that you have the total cost including all taxes and administration charges and also the amount of miles you have at your disposal before extra mileage charges kick in.

Most vehicles will be full of gas when you hire it. Always refill the vehicle with gas before you return it to the rent a car company as they will charge fees to refill it themselves and these charges can be high. Some rental locations are some distance from gas stations so make a note of where they are so that you dont pass them all on the way back to the rental company before you can refill the car.

Always check over the car for any dents and scratches before you drive the vehicle. Normally you will be given a schedule or image of any damage. If you are concerned about any damage you can even photograph the vehicle to substantiate your position.

Don't return the car in a very dirty condition as cleaning fees can be charge. Normal grime etc from driving the cars on sealed roads is acceptable. Some car hire firms will not allow their vehicles to be driven on unsealed roads so always check with them if you want to travel on these types of roads.
